About Dr. Kamran Massoumi

Dr. Kamran Massoumi, the acclaimed ophthalmologist, presides over the Oklahoma Eye Institute and Omni Surgical Center, both based in Lawton, Oklahoma. Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1967, he hails from a family known for its significant contributions to politics and medicine. His paternal grandfather was an influential politician and military officer, notably serving as the Minister of Agriculture under the Shah’s regime. On the maternal side, his lineage boasts pioneering efforts in the field of ophthalmology, directly influencing his career path in medicine.

Driven by Ancestral Achievements

Kamran Massoumi grew up inspired by his maternal grandfather, a foundational figure in Iranian ophthalmology. Appointed by Reza Shah Pahlavi to establish and lead Iran’s first ophthalmology department, his grandfather was instrumental in developing treatments for trachoma and pioneering the country’s first corneal transplants, earning the title “Father of Ophthalmology in Iran.” This impressive legacy motivated Dr. Massoumi to pursue a similar path, dedicating himself to advancing the field of ophthalmology.

Navigating New Horizons in the United States

Amidst the turmoil of the Iran-Iraq War in 1983, Dr. Massoumi’s family relocated to the United States, setting down roots in Marin County, California. He quickly assimilated into the educational system, excelling at Marin Catholic High School. His academic journey continued at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned Medical Physics and Middle Eastern Studies degrees. He furthered his education at St. Louis University Medical School, earning an MD with a distinction in research, and completed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Pioneering Eye Care in Western Oklahoma

Dr. Kamran’s original plan to return to California after his residency changed when he recognized the critical need for ophthalmological expertise in Western Oklahoma. He joined BVA in 2002, initiating a transformative era in local eye care. In 2014, he established the Oklahoma Eye Institute, introducing advanced technologies and broadening the availability of specialized eye care services to the community.

Improving Healthcare Access

Dedicated to enhancing healthcare accessibility, Dr. Massoumi played a key role in founding the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton and setting up an office-based operating room in Elk City. These facilities have significantly reduced the need for extensive travel by local patients for surgical care, thus enhancing their quality of life by providing closer and more convenient medical services.

Dedication to Family and Humanitarian Efforts

Dr. Massoumi met his wife, a graduate of Creighton University with a master’s degree in International Business from Webster University, during his medical studies in St. Louis. They have two daughters, with the elder pursuing a dual degree in law and healthcare management at the University of Oklahoma and the younger gearing up to attend Oklahoma State University. The family is deeply committed to martial arts, with each member achieving black belt status in Taekwondo. Dr. Massoumi’s commitment extends beyond his family and professional life; he is actively involved in global humanitarian initiatives, including eye surgeries during medical missions, such as a significant trip to Vietnam.
